Detailed Evaluation Criteria
Participation 15%
Attendance 5%
Regular attendance is mandatory, and attendance will be taken each week. Five percent is dedicated solely to whether you come to class or not.
Active Participation in class 10%
Classes are structured to be interactive, as it is important for students to talk about what they learned from the readings. It helps to understand the material better and aids in the learning process. Therefore, you will be expected to be active and interactive in class, and be prepared to discuss the key arguments or point of analysis or critical questions relevant to the weekly assigned material. This means that you must have read the readings before class.
Video Responses: 40% (4 x 10%)
There are five video options in the first half of the course. You will be asked to provide a written response to four of these video options. Written responses should be 1-1.5 pages single spaced (500-750 words) in length (12 point font). Provide a short synopsis of the video, pick one or two points, issues, or themes etc that you want to respond to, and then reflect on these points critically and analytically. Connect your comments/arguments to course material. Be careful not to submit a descriptive narrative, or to submit an opinion piece without some critical thought. Video Reponses are due at the beginning of the following Wednesday lecture. Each submission is worth ten percent, and four must be submitted. If you choose to submit five responses, the lowest grade will not be included.
Presentation 20%
Each student will be in a group of four to five to present a topic to their peers in the second half of the course. The style of the presentation will combine lecture style and interactive dialogue framed by critical questions. Presentation Topics include: Law & Regulation, Commerce & Consumption, Social Media, Government & Democracy, Advertising & Marketing or another topic/theme that we have no discussed in class (please discuss with me). More details will be provided about presentation expectations in class.
